NUTS & SADDLES.

Normandy cows providing bone nut blanks at Belforti Instruments Paris

Our nuts and saddles are made entirely by hand using an extremely precise method. In addition to being designed to be identical to the original saddle of your instrument, we manufacture them using a 3D model allowing us to perfectly measure the spacing of the strings according to their gauge. Finally, thanks to a unique stop system coupled with state-of-the-art measuring devices, we can achieve precision with a tolerance threshold of 20 micrometers on the final height of the strings for an adjustment of a finesse comparable to the work of a a PLEK. We only use high-quality bone for our saddles, and the saddles we offer are made with the same attention to detail as the production models.

The standard bone pieces that we use are only from French cow femurs, and are sorted to exclude any piece with an irregular density or presenting a growth defect. The choice of the femur is not arbitrary, it is the bone that has to support the most weight on the animal, it is therefore denser and has perfect mechanical characteristics to fulfill its role well.

The premium bone pieces come from the femurs of French bulls reared in the open air. Likewise, the femurs are chosen for similar reasons, the difference being in the greater weight of the bulls, which therefore have particularly strong femurs. Their slower growth, their more peaceful lives due to free-range farming give these bones unparalleled structure and characteristics. Finally, these pieces are run through our acoustic analysis software, and their mechanical and tonal profile is established. We systematically exclude parts that do not meet our specifications, or that have an acoustic profile that could collide with that of your instrument. For any request concerning the use of other materials, you can contact us.

FRETWORK

Stewmac Erlewine Neck Jig fretting station Belforti Instruments Paris

A good fretwork is the key to a good setup. Here at Belforti, we take this core luthier skill extremely seriously. All of our fretting operations are done using a tension simulator, which allows us to work on your fretboard profile under the exact same tension as your stringed guitar. Only this process can guarantee your fretboard geometry is in proper alignment and isn’t affected by the post-modification due to the instrument being under tension.

We then take the time to ensure that our frets are installed, dressed, crowned, and polished to the highest standards. From simple fret dressing to full refrets, we can handle any fretwork needs you may have.

We propose two different styles of fret end dressing, traditional beveled ends or hemispherical ends*. Different fretwires and materials are available, and we will advise you on which best fits your needs.

*Only on bound fretboards.

The electronics within your instrument are as vital to its voice as the strings and body. Our electronics repair service is meticulous and comprehensive, designed to address any and all issues from the simplest to the most complex. Whether you're faced with a crackling potentiometer, a noisy output jack, or a silent pickup, we have the expertise to diagnose and rectify the problem.

We begin each repair with a thorough diagnostic to pinpoint the exact nature of the issue. We understand the nuances of passive and active circuitry, ensuring that every repair not only restores function but also respects the tonal characteristics of your instrument.

For upgrades or custom wiring requests, we offer a tailored service that matches your sonic ambitions with the right components, from boutique capacitors to custom-wound pickups. With our electronic repairs, your instrument will sound as crisp and clear as the day you first played it, if not better.

Structural Repairs

At the heart of every instrument is its structure, which not only determines its durability but also its tone and playability. Our structural repair services are designed to address any damages or wear that may compromise the integrity of your instrument. We approach each repair with a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, ensuring that every instrument retains its original character while benefiting from the strength of contemporary repair methods.

Cracks and breaks are treated with precision, using high-quality adhesives and clamps to ensure a repair that's as inconspicuous as it is robust. We pay meticulous attention to wood grain alignment and color matching, striving for seamless restorations. Bracing and internal structural components are crafted and adjusted with the same care afforded to the creation of a new instrument. We also offer neck resets, essential for maintaining the correct angle and action, which can revitalize an older instrument's tone and playability.

Understanding that the soul of an instrument lies in its resonance and response, we go beyond mere aesthetics. Our structural repairs aim to restore the instrument to its fullest sonic potential, balancing the integrity of its construction with the nuances of its sound. Each repair is a bespoke process, informed by a thorough assessment of the instrument's condition and the musician's needs.

BRIDGE PLATES & BRACES

Acoustic Guitar Belforti Instruments Paris

The bridge plate is a thin piece of wood that is responsible for transferring the strings' vibrations to the soundboard of the guitar. If the bridge plate becomes damaged, it can affect the tone and playability of the guitar. In most cases, improper string installation or uneven wear may be responsible for the bridge plate’s damage. Repairing this crucial part will often bring your guitar back to its best playing condition. For the least damaged plates, a simple patch that will restore your bridge plate’s condition can be added.

On the other hand, simple upgrades are possible, even if your bridge plate is in mint condition. On production models, the woods used for bridge plates aren’t always the best options. We propose several upgrades that will greatly improve your tone and playing experience. Using the best plates made from the best materials, from birdseye maple to carbon fiber, this simple modification will make your instrument last longer.

Another common issue with acoustic guitars is loose or cracked braces. Old guitars with a long playing history, temperature and humidity variations, or poor build quality are reasons for these issues. This is a common repair, and we offer a quick and affordable repair service that solves it in the long term.
